How to Reset a MacBook that’s Locked (101 Tech Guide)

This article will provide you with an understanding of how to reset a MacBook that’s locked.

The most recent MacBook was announced on June 2022. The MacBook is a great option if you’re in the market for a new laptop. It’s powerful, well-designed, and relatively affordable. And with the M1 chip, it will always be at the top of the game for years to come.

The MacBook Air is the company’s ultraportable notebook computer. It was first introduced in 2008. The MacBook Air was designed to be as thin and light as possible and is currently available in 11- and 13-inch models.

The MacBook is now a more cohesive product; it looks and feels more like a premium product than ever before. The MacBook Pro is the company’s more powerful notebook computer.

However, you may be locked out of your computer if you don’t always remember your password. That’s because Apple requires all users to set up a password to log in, and if you forget it, you’re out of luck.

But there’s nothing to worry about, even if you get locked out, because there are always solutions to everything. If you forget your password and can’t seem to log back in, you can always reset your device, even when it’s locked.

Let us know how.

Recovery Mode Using the r Keys:

If you’ve been locked out of your MacBook, you know it can be a frustrating experience. You can do a few things to try to get back in if you’re not pleased with your current situation.

First, try to restart your Mac. This may seem obvious, but it can be the simplest solution. If you’re lucky, the restart will fix the problem, and you’ll be able to log in as usual. If restarting doesn’t work, your next option is to use the recovery mode.

But how to do that?

First, reboot your mac, and press and hold the Command and R keys while starting it up. You will come across the recovery mode menu as soon as you do this. Here, the Disk Utility option can be used to start up the disk. Using this option can help fix your problem and allow you to log back in.

If neither of these solutions works, you’ll need to resort to a more drastic measure: resetting your MacBook to its factory settings.

(NOTE: This will erase all your data, so back up anything important first.)

Resetting your device means erasing your hard drive, and once you do that, you will need to Reinstall the macOS option.

Once your MacBook is reset, you’ll be able to log in and set it up as if it’s brand new.

How to Unlock a Mac Without a Password?

Assuming you don‘t know the password of your Mac and you are locked out, there are still a few ways you can try to unlock it.

1. Shut down your MacBook.

2. Then select the command+R keys and switch on your laptop.

3. Choose your language when prompted. You will come across the macOS utility window, where you should click on the “utilities” option.

4. Select “Terminal” from the utility menu.

5. In the Terminal window, type “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press Enter.

6. Select your startup disk and click the “Reset Password” button.

7. Next, set a new password and press the “save” button.

8. Once saved, exit the Terminal window and restart your device.

Use your Apple ID to Reset your Password

You could also have logged into your Apple ID on your Mac at the beginning of your setup so that you could reset your password easily in seconds.

You may want to reboot your computer to find your recovery option when you input your wrong username three times.

If you forgot your Mac’s password and didn’t have a recovery key, you can reset it with your Apple ID. Here’s how:

1. Go to Apple’s website and click on the “Account” tab.

2. Next, sign into your account with your Apple credentials.

3. Move to the “security” tab right after.

4. Under the “Reset Password” section, click on the button and reset your new password.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password.

How to Reset a MacBook by Using Another Apple Account?

If you need to reset your MacBook and don’t have the password for the account that you’re currently logged into, you can use another Apple account to reset your password.

Here’s how:

1. Go to “Apple Menu” and click “System Preferences.”

2. Next, select the Users & Groups icon.

3. Click on the lock icon in the bottom left corner to unlock the preference pane.

4. Enter the password for the other Apple account you want to use to reset your password.

5. Click on the Reset Password button.

6. Enter the new password for the account in the New Password field.

7. Reenter the password in the Verify Password field.

8. Click on the Reset Password button to reset the password for the account.

Can a Locked Mac be Unlocked?

Locked Macs can be unlocked with the help of a professional. There are many reasons someone might want to lock their Mac, such as preventing unauthorized access to personal information or keeping sensitive data safe. Regardless of the reason, a locked Mac can be unlocked by a professional who knows how to bypass the security features.

When you find the computer you want to unlock, you need the passcode you created while locking it using “Find My Mac.” When you forget your password, you have three choices:

  • Register on-site and select your Mac from the Devices menu.
  • Select Unlock.
  • Follow the following procedure to verify your id.

Recovery mode is a special mode where you can boot your Mac to recover from serious problems or perform maintenance tasks. In addition to that, you can also:

Install or reinstall macOS Restore from a Time Machine backup.

Things You Can do Before You Erase a MacBook

When you erase a MacBook, you are essentially starting from scratch. This can be a good situation if you want to start fresh or if you’re selling or giving away your Mac, you need to ensure that your data and files are erased from the device.

But if you would still like to have your files as it is, you should do a few things first.

1. Back up your data: The most important thing to do before erasing your MacBook is to back up your data. This way, you won’t lose any important files or memories. There are a few different ways you can back up your data:

– Use Time Machine: Time Machine is a built-in feature on macOS that automatically backs up your data. For this built-in feature, you will need to have an external drive.

– Use iCloud: iCloud is a cloud storage service for Apple. You can use iCloud to back up your data seamlessly without any external device.

– Use a third-party service: Apart from the two options above, you can always go for third-party services that offer cloud storage, such as OneDrive or Dropbox.

2. Sign out of iCloud: If you’re signed in to iCloud, you should sign out before you erase your MacBook. By doing so, you won’t lose any data that’s stored in your iCloud. To sign out of iCloud, go to System Preferences > iCloud and click the “Sign Out” button.

3. Deauthorize your computer: If you’ve purchased any music, movies, or TV shows from iTunes, you’ll need to deauthorize your computer before you erase it.

4. Uninstall any applications: If you have any applications installed that you want to keep, you should uninstall them before you erase your MacBook. Drag it from the Applications folder to the Trash to uninstall an application.

5. Restart your MacBook: Once you’ve backed up your data, signed out of iCloud, deauthorized your computer, and uninstalled any applications, you can restart your MacBook. To restart your MacBook, go to the Apple menu and click “Restart.”

6. Erase your MacBook: Now you’re ready to erase your MacBook.

To do so, first, open the Apple menu and click on “restart.” As you will see your MacBook starting up, you will come across the “macOs utilities” feature. Upon seeing that, Click on the “Disk Utility” option and select your hard drive.

Then, click on the “Erase” button and choose the “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” format. Finally, click on the “Erase” button and enter your password to confirm.

I hope this guide was able to solve your queries.
