Seniors are rated to be the slowest people to adapt to new technology. However, it is surprising that they are actually more tech-savvy than we imagine.

Seniors have seen a lot of technological changes happen. Although most seniors who are receptive to technology are mostly educated and below 65 years of age, some tend to distance themselves from technology. It’s not a good idea, given the fact that technology brings great benefits along with it. It doesn’t matter whether you are looking to do a minor thing like sending a message to someone or doing more in your daily life. It’s all possible if you have the right technology with you.

Smartphones

Technology can be of many benefits to seniors. First, it can aid them to live independently, especially in their golden years. For instance, technology helps them be tracked through GPS, have a medical alert system, and keep in touch with people.

Mobile technology has been growing at a fast rate for the past few years. As a result, research shows that four out of every ten seniors own a smartphone. According to seniors, they should have a smartphone as it allows them to access their freedom.

There are smartphone companies that are developing smartphones specially designed for seniors. This makes them exceptionally easy to operate.

Computer and Internet Use

Research has it that 43% of seniors are part of social media. So actually, seniors who are involved with social media platforms are more physically and mentally healthier than their counterparts.

Social media can improve the quality of life for seniors in the following ways:-

  • Feel personal fulfillment.
  • It helps to stimulate the body and mind.
  • Connect with other people.

There are a lot of social media platforms such as Facebook, Skype, and Email, etc.

  • Facebook

Facebook allows users to connect with family and friends. However, seniors have the opportunity to interact with people in their area.

For instance, they can join special groups in which they have an interest or a group related to their hobbies. However, it is crucial for them always to have a guide. This is to help them not fall victim to a web of lies on the internet, which is quite common in today’s time.

  • Skype

Skype is a social media platform that helps people keep in touch with friends and family via video calls. One can also send messages.

This platform can be a great way for seniors to keep in touch with their families. They can send videos, messages, screen sharing, and even video group calls.

  • Emails

Emails are very easy to use. Seniors can keep in touch with their loved ones by sending their updates or photos, documents, messages, and all types of attachments.

However, there are a few hardships that seniors face while using technology. They include anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, and physical barriers such as asthma or arthritis.

It is advised that seniors should always be under the care of a guide while using technology to avoid disasters like identity theft or money fraud.
