Overview

We’ll walk through how to update your device wirelessly and how to update it using your computer. Before you start, back up your device, plug it into power, and connect to Wi-Fi.

Update Via Mac

How to update iPhone via Mac?

You will need a compatible cable using a Mac or Windows computer. Let’s start with updating your device wirelessly.

After receiving an update for your device.

You might get a pop-up on the screen, which you can tap to install the update.

Otherwise, you can open Settings>tap General>tap Software Update.

  • To update your iPhone or iPad using your computer, make sure your device is plugged into your computer and that your computer is connected to the internet.
  • If you’re using Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open the Finder.
  • Open iTunes if you’re using a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier or a Windows computer.
  • Otherwise, locate your device in the sidebar and ensure you’re in the General tab.
  • You may see a message about updating your device when you connect it to your computer.
  • In some versions of iTunes, this may appear as Settings.
  • Next, click Update.
  • Then click Download and Update and follow the prompts.

Now you can keep your iPhone or iPad up to date and enjoy all the latest features.

Software Update

  1. You have to make sure that your device is compatible, which is very simple.
  2. If you have iOS 14 right now, you can update to iOS 15.
  3. So, now that you know you can update to iOS 15.
  4. We need to go into our settings and remove the beta profile.

iOS 15

  1. If we have that installed, mine is in settings general.

Opting Out of Beta Programs

How to update your iPhone automatically?
So if you don’t want to receive betas anymore, remove this profile. But if you want to get betas in the future, you can keep this enabled, but most people probably do not want to run betas anymore.
Once the official version comes out, you’ll only be getting the final public releases in the future when you remove this.

Backup Your Data

And no more betas to update to. Now, we also want to make a backup of our data, so this is probably an essential step in this article.

  • So, if we go to our settings and go to the iCloud section and then to iCloud.
  • You need to go to iCloud backup right here and ensure that it’s turned on and back up your device.
  • It doesn’t matter if it shows that it was updated or just, you know, backed up last night.
  • You want to do one right before you update to iOS 15.
  • You also want to go back to the backup page and select everything you want to be included in that backup.

Keeping Data

  • If you want to keep your text messages, you know, your safari data, all of that you want to, go ahead and toggle these on so that they are all included in your iCloud backup.
  • If you don’t have enough storage in your iCloud to make a complete backup of your device, go into manage storage right here and maybe delete some old backups so once this loads up, you can see we have a backup section.
  • It will not be huge, but if you go into the “information” section, you can see old backups, and maybe it’s devices that you don’t even have any more or just other backups from the same phone you don’t need.

Deleting Unnecessary Data

  1. You can find something in here to delete and free up some space. If you need it, you may see things here taking up more space than you thought.
  2. So you can remove them to give yourself enough space to back up your device, and of course, if you do physical backups, like if you plug your phone into your computer and make a backup through Finder or iTunes.
  3. You can also do that. It’s the same as the iCloud backup. iCloud backups are more convenient, and you don’t need to plug them into a computer to restore them.
  4. That’s why it is recommended, but if you are old school and like doing it through the computer, there’s nothing wrong with that.
  5. Now, we have to make sure that we have enough storage space to download and install the iOS 15 updates, so if we go to our settings and go to general and then down to iPhone storage.
  6. You should see your storage right here, and for iOS 15, there’s a first in the history of iOS, and that is that Apple only requires 500 megabytes of free space to install this update.
  7. So before, it would take five to six gigabytes of available storage to update to the latest significant iOS release. Still, with iOS 15, Apple only requires 500 megabytes of free space, which is incredible.
  8. Hence, most people probably have 500 megabytes of free space. If you’re on a 16-gigabyte device, you may have a challenge with even 500 megabytes.
