Google docs have become one of the most prominent text processing tools, whether creating documents for business or educational purposes. With google docs, creating and customizing the document is rather simple, thanks to its wide range of tools that can be used for various functions.
Correspondingly, Google docs have a tool for inserting a text box into your document. Adding text boxes to your documents can help highlight relevant information in your document and effectively assist in organizing your thoughts visually with the help of a flow chart or by using shapes, callouts, or even arrows.
In Google slides, you can insert a text box by simply clicking on the Insert tab, selecting the Text Box, and then finally dragging it and creating it wherever you wish on the slide. Whereas in Google docs, it is not as simple. I will share with you the different ways you can add a text box to your Google doc, and we will also go through some of its customization features and functions.

How to Add Text Box in Google Docs:
1. Insert a text box in Google docs using the drawing tool function
Step 1 – Create a new Google doc by clicking on the nine dots on the right-hand side and choosing Google docs in the Home tab of your browser.
Alternatively, there is a neat shortcut to open blank Google docs.
Type “docs. new” in your browser’s URL bar, and it will open a new document immediately. Or open the document you wish to add a text box to.
Step 2 – From the top menu bar, click the Insert menu, then from the drop-down menu, select a Drawing tool.
Step 3 – Select New, and the Drawing dialog box pops up on your screen.
- From the Drawing tool’s commands, select the text box icon from the top menu bar.
- When you hover over the drawing area, you will observe that your mouse arrow changes into a crosshair cursor. Left-click and drag your mouse to the desired size you would like to place the text box.
- Now, to add text inside the text box, just double-click inside the text box. You will see a blinking cursor inside the text box, which means you can now add text inside the text box.
Format and Edit
You can also format and edit your text box according to your preferences by clicking the desired formatting command.
- To resize, select the blue square resizing handle, click and drag them to your desired size.
- You can change the border color by selecting the Border Color from the toolbar on top. Additionally, you can also change the weight of the border and also the type of border dash for your text box.
- You can change the font type of the text inside the box by selecting the font option from the same toolbar.
- If you want to change the font size, select your text from the text box and click on the three dots in the same toolbar. You will see a number with an option to increment or decrement your text size.
- There are also several other options to change text color, fill color inside the text box, and align your text in a certain way.
- If you aren’t satisfied with how the text box turned out after the formatting, click on the Clear Formatting tool from the three dots.
Save and Formatting options.
- After editing and formatting your text box, click the Save and Close button to save your text box in Google docs.
- You will notice that the text box is now added to your document.
- If you want to create further edits to your text box, select the edit option from the contextual menu under the text box you just created, and it will take you straight away to the drawing tool.
- You can also choose how your text box appears in your document by selecting the Wrap text tool.
- Moreover, you can also choose to insert a text box behind the rest of the document by clicking the Behind text option.
- You will also see an option for editing images if your text box has an image.
2. Create and insert a text box in google docs using shapes
You can also use custom shapes that will function as a text box.
- Select Insert, and from the same drawing tool dialog box, choose your desired shape from the Shape option by clicking on the Shapes icon.
- After you have selected a shape, follow the same steps you did earlier. Click and drag on the drawing area and insert your text into the shape.
- Like you did in previous steps to edit and format, similarly, do it for the custom shape.
- After you are done, select Save and close button.
3. Insert a text box in google docs using a single cell table
Now that we have explored the drawing tool and its various functions and commands let us look at how you can create a text box in google docs using the single cell table.
- Click the Insert menu, click the Table command, and select a single cell table with one column and row (1×1).
- Insert your text inside the box you just created by clicking inside.
- You will notice a down arrow on the right side to tweak the table’s borders, but it won’t be required since we are using a single cell table.
- You can choose the edit option from the top ribbon tools to edit the text box.
How to insert an Image into the text box in google docs
Adding an image to your text boxes can help draw attention to a significant piece of information in your document. To add an image to your text boxes:
- Create a text box using the text box icon.
- Select the Image option from the Drawing tool.
- Upload your desired image in the pop dialog box of Insert Image.
- Your image will be placed in the drawing area; drag the image over the text box.
- Right-click on the image and select send backward from the ordering option. This will make sure that your text box is visible.
- Edit the font color according to the image’s background color so that the text inside is legible.
- After formatting and customizing the image to your preference, click save to insert it into your document.
How to create a Flowchart in Google docs using shapes
To organize your processes and workflow, a flowchart is one of the most convenient ways to go about it. You can create a flowchart in Google docs by following a few simple steps:
- From the drawing dialog box, open Shapes and select your desired shapes. Since we are making a flowchart, you will have to create more shapes.
- Place them according to your preference in the drawing area.
- Please select a preferred line from line styles and place it between the text boxes.
- You can also edit the Line start and Filled arrow by clicking on the arrow and heading to the menu on the top.
- After inserting text into your text boxes for your flowchart, click save, and it will be inserted into your document.
- Click edit from the contextual menu if you want to make changes thereupon.
